Plans, billing, and refunds
Updated · August 2026
The short version: the free plan is the full study loop, not a trial. The paid plans are about scale — more storage, more AI, more room. And if something goes wrong with a charge, we refund it.
What's free
Everything you need to actually study: notes, the notebook, flashcards, tests, spaced repetition, PDF reading, and the mobile apps. Free accounts get:
- 10 active spaces — archived spaces don't count, so you can archive last semester and keep creating.
- 500 MB of storage — storage counts uploaded files (PDFs, images, voice recordings; up to 50 MB each). Text costs effectively nothing, so notes and flashcards will never be what fills it up.
- A monthly allowance of AI actions — one action is one use of an AI feature: generating cards from notes, summarizing a PDF, transcribing a voice note, or reading a scanned page. Bigger jobs count as more actions — transcribing a full lecture uses more than a quick voice memo. A meter in the app shows exactly how much you've used, and if you run out, AI pauses until the month resets — studying never stops.
- 3 editable notebooks and voice recordings up to 20 minutes each.
No credit card, and no time limit.
What Pro and Student add
Pro is $14.99 a month, or $95.99 a year (about $8 a month). It raises storage to 10 GB (files up to 100 MB), unlocks unlimited spaces and unlimited editable notebooks, 90-minute voice recordings, semantic search, PDF chat, and a much larger monthly AI allowance.
Student is the same features as Pro at $8.99 a month or $59.99 a year — the cheapest way to use Mento. To unlock it, add your school email in Settings after signing up; we send a confirmation link, and clicking it activates student pricing immediately. No ID uploads, no third-party verification service.
Verification lasts four years, and we remind you before it runs out. Still a student? Re-confirm your school email and nothing changes. Not anymore? Your account stays exactly as it is — and an active subscription keeps its student price for as long as it stays active.
One note on codes: a friend's referral code or a partner code takes 20% off Pro's first payment. Codes don't stack with the student price — you simply get whichever price is lower, so you never lose anything by having both.
Cancelling
Two clicks from Settings, any time. You keep everything you paid for until the end of the billing period — nothing disappears the moment you cancel.
If you then drop back to Free: nothing is deleted. Your notes, cards, and files stay where they are and stay readable. What changes is what you can add — if you're over the free plan's storage or space limits, you can't create more until you're back under them. Delete something, or resubscribe, and you're moving again.
Refunds
Where you subscribed decides who can refund you:
- On the web (billed by Mento via Stripe): refundable in full — monthly charges within 14 days, annual charges within 30 days, and that includes a renewal you forgot to cancel. Email support@mento.so and we'll sort it out.
- Inside the iPhone or iPad app (billed by Apple): Apple handles the payment, the renewal, and any refund — we genuinely can't issue these. Request yours at reportaproblem.apple.com.
- On Google Play: request a refund from Google within 48 hours of the charge. After that window, email us and we'll handle it.
This is also why some subscriptions are "billed by Apple instead of Mento": if you subscribed in the iOS app, Apple owns that billing relationship and it's managed from your Apple account settings. Subscribing on the web avoids the app-store fee, which is why web prices are the lowest.
